I hate to be the one with the bad news but Alex passed away at seven this morning May 27th.
I got a call from Eric Toth and I am sure that he would want to thank all of you for all your love and kindness you have shown Alex in the last few years. This site meant a lot ot Alex and all of you fine folks he thought alot of.
I do not have any information at this time about services but I think they will be private for family type service. And there will be a memorial panel at San Diego that every one can attend.
I have said this once before, but those 20 bags of letters and cards was a really beautiful thing for Alex. Not only was he shocked but I think he then knew how much he was loved by his fans and that his work will live forever.
Send up a prayer for him and his family tonight.
John

I`d like to pass on my deepest condolences to the Toth family.
Alex changed my life so much for the better.
I was honoured to find that he was going to draw three covers for my 1991 Marvel UK comic Zorro. At first, when told by my editor that I wasn`t going to do them, that some American artist had been given the job,I was furious!
She then went on to tell me the artist`s name. I couldn`t believe it. "THE Alex Toth is going to do MY covers?!" They were incredibly beautiful and powerful images and I will always be proud that my work,so early on in my career, was graced with such stunning talent.
I later found out that Alex had wanted to do the series but had been turned down (!!!) and was naturally angry about this ridiculous event. I wanted to write to him but due to this I never did.
I leaned so much from this master and owe him so very much. I always consider when drawing what Alex would do,how he would make the image better. He was an amazing artist and story teller.
I will always miss him.

A nice piece from Vito DelSante & Cliff Chiang over at The Pulse:

"They say that April showers bring May flowers. May brought us something less benign. Just as we were preparing for June and we started the "official" convention season with Wizard World Philadelphia, we had to say good bye to one of our own; Alex Toth."

Another fan offers his deepest condolences. Please take solace in how greatly Alex Toth has affected so many people, and how he has transcended footnote status in the annals of our world's culture and will remain relevant and in favor for generations.

Thank you for putting yourself out there Alex Toth

I just wanted to express my appreciation for Alex's life and work. We corresponded irregularly and he was always honest and helpful in his critiques and advice, going to great lengths, filling both sides of the postcards he sent with invaluable feedback. I'm so glad that I made a point of visiting him at his home a couple of years ago. His was a singular talent and he was a unique and indelible personality. He may very well be the finest storyteller in the history of comics. I learned a great deal from him and I'll never forget him.

From Archie Comics, by way of Newsarama:

"Alex Toth had a long an illustrious career in both comics and animation. Archie Comics had the pleasure of working with Mr. Toth in the 70's and 80's on such series as Black Hood, Blue Ribbon Comics and Red Circle Sorcery. Alex Toth will be missed by Archie Comics and we would like to wish our sincerest condolences to his family and friends."

It was always a pleasure to deal with Alex, he was the best colleague of my dad at H&B. I'm sorry he has passed and I lost touch with him.

I used to build models for him to rotoscope when I was a kid, that was fun work…my first professional commissions.
I painted some big 1/24th scale WWI airplane kits white and pin striped the edges for him. This way they could shoot them against a blue background and then the lines would hold for transfer to xerox cels.

Alex's shows Space Ghost and Shazzan were the coolest looking H&B shows, I'm happy he found resurgent fame with the rebirth of Space Ghost on the cartoon network. I know my dad relaly enjoyed workign with him on those projects.

Alex always encouraged everybody's talents, including mine. RIP and good luck in the big cartoon factory in the sky.. say hello to my pop.

Very sad news. I graduated from Jr.H.S. 30 with Alex and he met my sister at SIA. I remembered his notebook was always filled with sketches of action figures. Really good - even before he was a teenager. I watched him drawing the Green Lantern in 1947 in his apt. But only after reading in Pete Hamill's autobiography that Alex was the best young cartoonist ever, did I track him down. It was easy - I didn't know his talents had created such a huge fan club. He was happy to hear from someone from the distant past and remembered things about me that I had forgotton - what a sharp mind! I sent him a copy of our graduating class photo from JrHS 30 and we exchanged a few letters (cards from Alex, of course).
God, was he alive!! But I can't say he was content - he was his own action figure.
I wish we had been able to meet again.

My condolances to the Toth family.

Alex will be miss!

P.S. I didn't really know Alex but I did call him once. It was the summer after I graduated from SVA. I wanted to know if it was ok to send him samples of my work to look at. He said it was ok and we talked for a bit about comic professionals who have taught at SVA. I sent him my work and, to my surprised, got a postcard back from him.

I always meant to write back but without pursuing comics I didn't feel the need. I always appreciated the fact that he was willing to give advice to a young artist....one that he never met in person and didn't know on a personal level.

So sad to learn that my friend Alex Toth passed away 2 weeks ago. I met the great one in the late 60's at Mattel Toys, when I hired him to do artwork for an audio visual toy that we produced. I cannot recall the name of that product...but Alex illusrated about 10 full screen panels, telling the story of Aladdin and his Lamp.
i hadn't spoken to Alex in a couple of years but when he was hospitalized 2 months ago I spoke with his daughter Carrie.
I also knew Alex's late wife Guyla. A lovely and witty lady.
Best to the Toth family and best to you all!

In my opinion, Alex was the best...THE BEST...artist that the comic medium had produced. His design sense, his composition, all of his artistic components had a sensibility that would not be out of place in a fine art museum.

Every day while at my drawing board, I pick up one of the many fine books with Alex's drawings in them and riffle through, pausing to look at one or more drawings.

I always find something new there, and never tire of studying them.

Toth Family and Friends,

My name is Russ Morisi, my father's name was Peter Morisi or PAM as he was sometimes known in the comic book world. He was a friend, colleague and admirer of Alex.

My daughter, an artist in NYC, called me last night and told me of Alex's passing. I am very sorry for your loss and I hope you can find some solace in the fact that he left behind a legecy of work and friends.

I spent some time with Alex in July 1976 on my honeymoon in California. Alex and his wife took me and my wife on a whirlwind tour. We had dinner and drinks and a good time and spent the day with them.

Once again, my condolences, and I would like to know of any service I could attend or show my appreciation for the man. Please feel free to email me at glis7@att.net. Sincerely Russ Morisi
